Naval Gazing

A day in Samut Prakan will give you a chance to catch up on the history of the Royal Thai Navy

Guns, a submarine, torpedoes, a seaplane and a tank are just some of the exhibits at the Naval Museum in Samut Prakan. The museum offers a unique insight into the long and colourful history of the Royal Thai Navy.

On Sukhumvit Road, opposite the sprawling Royal Thai Navy Academy, the museum is a treasure trove of artifacts and memorabilia, from weapons and models of ancient warships to remnants of royal barges.

In 1891, the first telephone service was introduced, connecting the Ministry of Defence in Bangkok with Phra Chulachomklao Fortress in Samut Prakan. The telephone highly improved communication between Bangkok and this strategic fort, enabling instant reports to be sent by naval personnel of hostile foreign activities on the Chao Phraya.

After the short briefing, we proceeded to the main entrance of the museum building. As one steps inside the narrow hallway, there is little indication of what is to come. The first few rooms are dedicated to King Taksin the Great and Prince Chumphon. Exhibits of their personal belongings, such as handwritten manuscripts, a pipe for smoking tobacco and a compass, are interspersed with modern paintings of King Taksin on horseback and old ships sailing on turbulent seas.

On the opposite side of the hall is a display of weaponry that gun enthusiasts will find truly mind-blowing. Exhibits include everything from rifles, handguns and cannon, to shells and edged weapons, some dating back to the Vietnam War. Also on display are a selection of mortars, along with machine-guns and naval shells. Some of the oldest weapons date back to the mid-1930s.

A display of various bayonets also receives a lot of attention from visitors. As photography is allowed, visitors can take photos of themselves with their favourite weapons.

On the ground floor of the adjoining building are exhibits on past naval battles, including torpedoes, the country's first lighthouse and royal barges dating back to the reign of King Rama V. One of the wooden barges boasts an artistically carved royal emblem.

In my thought, there are very attractive show that can related to the life in the past. It shows a lot of useful stuff, and all of these stuff has been told about their properties. That make a new generation know what was going on in the past and what were these weapon. They are giving the knowledge and they are very useful

Thailand hope to defeat Kiwis in September

Thailand believe they can defeat New Zealand in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group 2 final in September. Thailand manager Taweesak Silvakul admired his players Kittipong Wachiramanowong, Weerapat Doakmaiklee, Sonchat Ratiwatana and Sanchai Ratiwatana for giving their all in the triumph yesterday. He also praised captain Paradorn Srichaphan, the former world number nine, whose experience was a major factor behind the win. Taweesak can defeat against New Zealand as Thailand's top player Danai Udomchoke is expected to return after a long lay-off. "if we have Danai, defeating New Zealand is not too difficult."he said.

Sea turtles in Chiang Mai

Half of the 169 sea turtle eggs are going to break and become a little sea turtles at Chiang Mai Zoo aquarium. This is the first time that endangered animals have been hatched. Eggs are the part of this festival, between the zoo and Navy's Sea Turtle Conservation Center. The other of remaining eggs will hatched in next few days. The conservation centre will nourish the newly hatched turtles for five to six months before releasing them to the open sea.The turtle festival was arranged to raise awareness of the plight of the endangered shelled animal and to encourage people to get involved in conservation efforts.

In my critical thinking, Thailand doesn't have many interesting animals they would like to involved in conservation efforts. Also Sea turtles, along with other turtles and tortoises, they are easy to have them in the aquarium. Sea turtles play key roles in two ecosystem types that are critical to them as well as to humans—oceans and beaches/dunes.They are friendly, but Marine turtles are caught worldwide, although it is illegal to hunt most species in many countries.A great deal of intentional marine turtle harvests worldwide are for food.

Many parts of the world have long considered sea turtles to be fine dining, and Thailand does it too.

Drilling concessions strongly opposed

What reminds you of Koh Samui - a world-class tourist destination legendary for its music festivals and pricey holiday homes for celebrities such as tennis player Justine Henin Hardenne and football coach Sven-Goran Eriksson? Well, Koh Samui is not only about sand, sea and fun in the sun. It is now also linked with oil exploration - something that is not so ravishing, and so unlike this beautiful resort island.

TOGETHER: Thousands of villagers formed a human chain around Koh Samui to show their stance against oil exploration projects.

Last week Koh Samui made it into the media limelight once again, but not in a favourable way.

Last Saturday, locals, tourists and members of the Samui tourism industry staged a protest against the oil exploration plan. Thousands of people linked hands to try and form a human chain along the island's 52km-long ring road.

Such a mass demonstration is out of character on an island famous for its festive ambience. Yet their frustration is well justified.

My own thought, doing like this activity is the one of the most important idea that will attractive more foreigner to come and visit, this way we will gain up more country's profit. This event makes me think about when Thailand has Peace disaster rehabilitation.On that time,Thais are very unity. They love each other and also help each other too. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has expressed confidence that a growing export sector will help lift economic growth to at least 7% this year.

Addressing a 90th anniversary event at the Commerce Ministry yesterday, Prime Minister Abhisit urged its officials to encourage the development of a creativeeconomy in the agriculture and service sectors. KITJA APICHONROJAREK

"The economy grew more than 10% in the first half on the back of strong exports. Exports should continue to expand in the third and fourth quarter," the premier said yesterday at a fair held by the Commerce Ministry to mark its 90th anniversary.

However, he admitted export growth for the rest of 2010 may be slower, as comparisons in the first half were to a very low base in early 2009 when the global recession was at its worst.

Thai exports in July grew for the ninth month on an annualised basis, but slowed from the month before. The value rose 20.6% from a year earlier to US$15.57 billion, after June's 46.3% year-on-year surge to a record of $18.04 billion.

Growth slowed due to a drop in shipments of rice, fruits and vegetables, and gems and jewellery. As well, exports started recovering in July last year when the economy started to rebound.

The premier urged the Commerce Ministry to help the private sector in doing business and play a key part in nurturing a creative economy, particularly for agricultural and service sectors.

The ministry is also being encouraged to outline a prudent strategy on international trade agreements and underline regional co-operation as to ensure fair trade and consumer protection.

Payungsak Chartsutthipol, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, said growth above 7% was highly likely should the government settle the Map Ta Phut environmental issues and restore the investment and trade climate.

The National Economic and Social Development Board will release official first-half economic data on Monday.

"Exports are expected to record 20% growth this year according to the Commerce Ministry," Mr Payungsak said. "Several products have fared better than expected, especially automobiles as Asean economies have thrived."

He said the private sector was not too worried about the strengthening baht because other currencies in the region were moving the same way, since the economies of the United States and Europe remain weak.

The Commerce Ministry set an export growth target of 10-15% for 2011 to ensure GDP grows by at least 7% in 2011, said minister Porntiva Nakasai.

In my own personal thinking, Growth is slower to export in this movement but the government will support crop and service businesses to increases exporting. Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries said it will grow more than 7% in this year. They guessed it will be 20% are growing in some businesses such as mobile and engine. The private businesses owner not worried about rate of money because money rate in many counties in Europe and American are weakness. In the present, people need to know more about finance and business, so they can gain their own profit. Finances are becoming more important , I guess that in the future people have to know it, not just people but also student,too.

NSC denies subway bomb claim

There are no intelligence reports pointing to a possible bomb attack on Bangkok's underground train system(MRT), as claimed by the opposition Puea Thai Party, National Security Council secretary-general Thawil Pliensri said on Monday.

Puea Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit has claimed that the government security agency had received fresh information about a plot to bomb the subway in September or October. He claimed this would be used as a reason to further postpone the general election.

"Mr Prompong did not attend meetings of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) and we have received no reports about a planned bombing as claimed by the Puea Thai Party," Mr Thawil said.

Security units were keeping a close eye on all major transport routes at all times. The current security situation in the country remains normal, he said.

"Mr Prompong may be concerned about the country, but his comment will not discredit the government and the CRES since we are monitoring the situation continually," Mr Thawil said.

The government had no plan to lift the state of emergency in Bangkok and the six other provinces yet, he said.

The cat-sized monkeys at last get their own scientific name, Callicebus caquetensis, in a description. "DEET" the main component popular insect repellents, has been warding off mosquitoes for about 50 years now. E-ticketing device tested for traffic law offenders

Police will give tickets to the show called traffic law violators by using the mobile electronic device called the "e-ticket".

The project will starts at the end of this month, the e-ticket device can print out the ticket on the spot ,that means police will not have to write out the ticket by themself.

The e-ticket will automaticlly linked to Royal Thai Police's database.

All infomation of tickets that have been issued will be save in the police station.

The drivers who get the ticket can pay for the fare in every police station.

For those drivers who hold electronic license,police will swipe the card through the device.

In my opinion, I think this is a good service because, the police wont do the corruption anymore.Nowadays,people do the same things as their nomal day. They still break the traffic rules.This derive will help police do the less job and make people beware of the derive.

Southern train services came to a halt yesterday when a train was derailed after running into a pickup truck in Chumphon.
Train No.43 from Bangkok to Surat Thani struck an Isuzu pickup at a railway crossing between Thung Kha and Saeng Dad railway stations in tambon Thung Kha, Muang district, at 3.10pm.
The accident damaged the line, forcing railway staff to suspend train services.
Train driver Sinchai Huadduan said the truck driver left it too late to cross. The railway crossing had a warning sign, but no barrier or traffic light.
The southbound train cut the pickup truck in half, injuring driver Somjai Julakhet, 38, who lives in tambon Thung Kha, and four passengers. The truck's engine was thrown over 10 metres from the vehicle.Two carriages of the train, carrying 52 passengers, were derailed.
Two concrete sleepers were cracked and rail spikes uprooted for one kilometre along the track.
Services were expected to have resumed by 10pm yesterday.

In my opinion, i think Thai's transportation is quite dangerous and unsafe. Thai people do not follow the rules of traffic and it cause a lot of accident that can also cause a death. Polices do not really strick ont the traffic rule that much and some of them are very lazy and selfish too! People are also lazy to follow the rules and when they get caught, they giive the police the money and later that police will lets them go. If compare to New Zealand that I have been there for a while. I learnt a lot of discipline and their country are very safe. I very glad with them and i want Thai people to have a lot more discipline too.

Thai education system

The Thai education system comprises 4 levels, namely: pre-school education, primary education, secondary education, and higher education.

Pre-school Education: is provided for 3-5year old children. This level will teach the kids to learn alot of life's begining. It is very important to send your children or your child to pre-school

Primary education: emphasizes literacy, numeracy, communication skills, and abilities relevant to future occupational roles. At this level, education is compulsory and free of charge, provided for children aged 6-11 including the disadvantaged ones

Secondary Education: is divided into two levels, each covering a period of three years. The lower level emphasizes on learners intellect, ethics morality and basic skills. It allows the learner to explore his individual interests and aptitudes through a wide choice of both academic and vocational subjects.

Higher Education: aims at the full development of human intellectuality, and the advancement of knowledge and technology. This level may be organized in the forms of colleges, universities, or institutions for specialized studies.

Almost ninety percent of primary school children attend either public schools or those run by Buddhist monasteries. In 1995-96, there were about six million students enrolled in primary schools. After the primary years, the attendance rates drop to just over fifty percent for secondary education, during the same school year listed above, only 3.8 million children attended lower- or upper-elementary schools.
The Thai government is talking about raising the required six years of education to nine years, although Thailand's literacy rate is one of the highest in Southeast Asia, at almost 95%.
There are many universities to choose from and and over 600,000 students did enroll and attend institutions of higher learning during the early 90s. The largest universities in Thailand are located in Bangkok (Chulalongkorn University, established in 1917) and in the north (Chiang Mai University, established in 1964).
In my opinion,when i was in high school, I graduated Mathayom-3 from Saint Joseph Convent School and I went to study in New Zealand for a while. I realized it was a big different between Thai education and New Zealand education.There it study by doing a things but in Thailand, they teach by reading the books. It is hard for student in Thailand to understand the lesson.
They have a small percentage of the people who do not study after they graduated from primary school.
